How weekly overtime works

In the U.S., the Fair Labor Standards Act requires overtime pay at 1.5× your regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Some states and employers use different thresholds (e.g., daily overtime after 8 hours in California) — set the threshold above to match your situation. Overtime is based on hours worked; PTO and holidays may not count unless your employer says so.

Overnight shifts and rounding

If your clock-out time is earlier than your clock-in time, this calculator assumes an overnight shift and adds 24 hours automatically. Many employers round clock times to the nearest 15 minutes (the "7-minute rule"); choose your rounding above to mirror your timecard.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is overtime pay calculated?

Hours above your threshold are paid at rate × multiplier. Example: $20/hr × 10 OT hours × 1.5 = $300 in overtime pay, on top of $800 regular pay.

What if my shift crosses midnight?

Enter the actual times — if clock-out is earlier than clock-in, 24 hours are added automatically, so 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM counts as 8 hours.

Does lunch break count as paid time?

Unpaid lunch is deducted here. If your lunch is paid, enter 0 minutes. Short rest breaks (under ~20 minutes) are usually paid work time.

What is a shift differential?

Extra pay per hour for less-desirable shifts (evenings, nights, weekends), often 5–15% above base rate. Enter it under Advanced options to see the weekly difference.

How does overtime work with two different pay rates?

Under the FLSA, your overtime premium is based on the weighted-average regular rate: total straight-time earnings divided by total hours. Switch to “Two rates” mode above and the calculator does this math for you — e.g. $20×30h + $30×20h gives a $24 regular rate.

Is 40 hours always the overtime threshold?

Federally yes, but some states require daily overtime after 8 hours, and some employers pay OT after 37.5 or 35 hours. Change the threshold to match your policy.
