Sales Tax Calculator

Figure the sales tax on any purchase in seconds. Pick your state for its 2025 base rate — or enter a custom rate — and see the tax, the total, or work backwards from a tax-included price.

Advanced options

Use this for your combined city + county + state rate from a receipt.

State base rate vs. what you actually pay

The rate in the dropdown is the statewide base rate for 2025 (Tax Foundation, as of July 1, 2025). Your receipt total is often higher because most states let cities, counties, and special districts add their own taxes on top — Louisiana averages 10.11% combined, the highest in the nation, while its state rate is only 5%.

Five states have no statewide sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon (Alaska still allows local taxes). California’s 7.25% — the highest state-level rate — already includes a mandatory 1.25% county add-on collected statewide. For an exact figure, enter your combined rate from a local receipt in the custom-rate box.

How to use this calculator

Add tax to price is the everyday case: a $100 item in California costs $107.25. Remove tax works backwards — if the register shows $107.25 tax-included, the pre-tax price was $100 and $7.25 was tax. Pick your state (or type any custom rate), and the math updates instantly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the tax on my receipt higher than this calculator shows?

City, county, and special-district taxes stack on top of the state base rate. Enter the combined rate from a previous receipt in the custom-rate box for an exact match.

Which states have no sales tax?

Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon have no statewide sales tax — though Alaska localities may still levy their own.

Is sales tax charged on groceries or clothing?

It depends on the state: many exempt groceries, some tax clothing, and a few do both. This calculator applies the rate to the full amount you enter.

Do I pay sales tax on online purchases?

Yes — online retailers collect tax based on your delivery address, under marketplace-facilitator laws now in effect in every state with a sales tax.

What’s the difference between sales tax and VAT?

US sales tax is charged once, to the final buyer. A VAT (used in 170+ countries) is collected at every stage of production, with businesses crediting tax already paid.
