Fraction Calculator
Add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions — including mixed numbers — in seconds. Enter two fractions, pick an operation, and get the simplified answer, the decimal value, and the full step-by-step work.
Use + − × ÷ (or + - * /) and parentheses. Mixed numbers like 1 1/2 work. × ÷ come before + −.

Understanding fraction arithmetic
Adding and subtracting needs a common denominator — multiply the denominators, or better, use their least common multiple so the numbers stay small. Multiplying is direct (tops × tops, bottoms × bottoms); dividing means flip the second fraction and multiply. Whatever you do, finish by dividing top and bottom by their GCD.
Mixed numbers like 1½ are just shorthand for improper fractions: 1½ = (1×2+1)/2 = 3/2. Convert first, calculate, then convert back.
Comparing fractions
To tell which of two fractions is bigger without a calculator, cross-multiply: for a/b vs c/d, compare a×d with c×b. The comparison box below does this automatically and tells you the difference as a fraction too.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you add fractions with different denominators?
Find a common denominator (the LCM of the two denominators is cleanest), rewrite each fraction with it, add the numerators, then simplify.
How do I simplify a fraction?
Divide the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor (GCD). The Euclidean algorithm in the steps box shows exactly how the GCD is found.
How do you divide fractions?
Keep the first fraction, flip the second (its reciprocal), then multiply. So 1/2 ÷ 1/4 = 1/2 × 4/1 = 2.
What is a mixed number?
A whole number plus a fraction, like 2¾. It equals the improper fraction (2×4+3)/4 = 11/4.
Why can't a fraction have zero as the denominator?
Division by zero is undefined — no number multiplied by 0 gives a non-zero numerator, so the value cannot exist.
