How currency conversion works

Every conversion is one multiplication: amount × rate. The rate table is quoted against the US dollar, so converting euros to yen goes through an implied cross rate: (USD→JPY) ÷ (USD→EUR). For example, if 1 USD = 148.50 JPY and 1 USD = 0.86 EUR, then 1 EUR = 148.50 ÷ 0.86 = 172.67 JPY. The page shows the exact rate used for your pair plus its inverse, so you can check the math in both directions.

Why rates move during the day

Exchange rates are set by the global foreign-exchange market, which trades 24 hours a day on weekdays. Rates shift with interest-rate decisions, inflation data, and market sentiment — so the number you see now can differ from the number your bank or card issuer actually applies. Card companies and banks also add their own markup (often 1–3%) on top of the market rate, which is why the converted total can differ slightly from your statement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do the live rates come from?

Rates are fetched from Frankfurter, a free open exchange-rate API that aggregates European Central Bank reference rates. No account or API key is needed, and your amounts are never sent anywhere — only the public rate table is downloaded.

What happens if I’m offline?

The converter first tries a rate table saved in your browser from the last 12 hours. If there is none, it falls back to a built-in estimate table clearly labeled “Offline estimate” with its date, so you still get an answer instead of an error.

Why is the result different from what my bank charged?

These are mid-market (interbank) reference rates. Banks, card networks, and money-transfer services add their own spread or fees on top — typically 1–3% — and may use the rate at the moment they process the transaction, not when you checked.

Can I use this for trading or business decisions?

No. Rates here are indicative reference rates and can lag the live market. They are fine for travel budgeting and quick estimates, but not for trading, invoicing in foreign currency, or any financial decision — check a real-time quote from your broker or bank.

Is any of my data sent to a server?

No. Everything runs in your browser. The only network request is the public rate-table download from the rates API; your amounts, currency choices, and identity are never transmitted or stored anywhere.

How often are the rates updated?

The underlying reference rates update once per business day. This page refreshes its copy on load and whenever you change currencies (at most once every 12 hours from the network), and reuses the saved copy in between.
